David Loy: Update and Shambala Sun Article

The Interfaith Summer Institute has booked David Loy to speak at a conference it is hosting in Vancouver in March: 3/5/10 to 3/7/10. He also has kindly offered to do something with Vancouver BPF while he is in town. Sunday, March 7 is the most likely day for BPF.

Sesshin with Sasaki Roshi

At 101 years of age, Joshu Sasaki Roshi is still teaching his unique brand of Zen. Michael Haederle offers us a rare look at this enigmatic master.

“You may hear bursts of gunfire or explosions during this sesshin,” the sign read. That gave me pause. Formal Rinzai Zen practice with Joshu Roshi was always intense, but gunplay had never before been part of the equation. As I read on, I realized that a movie was being shot in the neighborhood. It figured. Here in LA, reality and illusion mingle effortlessly.

Claude AnShin Thomas in Vancouver: Nov 28-30

November 9, 2008

Claude Thomas served as a helicopter crew chief in Vietnam and was shot down on five separate occasions. Wounded, he left the US Army with an honorable discharge in 1968. He became a Zen priest in 1995 and now works for peace through the Zaltho Foundation.

BPF Executive Director Ordained

Ekai Zenju Earthlyn Manuel, BPF’s executive director, received ordination as a Zen priest in the tradition of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi on Saturday, September 20th at San Francisco Zen Center, from her teacher Zenkei Blanche Hartman. A large circle of family, friends, dharma brothers and sisters were there to witness and celebrate.
