Subject: Invitation from Libby

Dear Friends,

I would like to invite you to a community forum: “Civil City Slam” on Tuesday, May 22, at 7 pm at First United Church 320 E. Hastings St, at Gore Ave. This forum is being organized as a result of an initiative undertaken by 16 Vancouver progressive elected representatives, representing 3 levels of government, including MP Libby Davies; MLAs David Chudnovsky, Adrian Dix, Jenny Kwan, Gregor Robertson, and Shane Simpson; City Councilors David Cadman, George Chow, Heather Deal, Raymond Louie, and Tim Stevenson; School Board Trustees Allan Blakely, Sharon Gregson, and Allan Wong; and Parks Board Commissioners Spencer Herbert and Loretta Woodcock.

We have worked together, for a just and sustainable city, in response to Mayor Sullivan’s so-called Project Civil City and have expressed our serious concerns about the impact of the Mayor’s project.

In a press release March 15, we stated our concern that, “the Mayor’s Project Civil City will result in a targeted crackdown on the most vulnerable in our city, in order to ‘clean up’ Vancouver for international scrutiny during the Olympics without any attempt to deal with the underlying social problems that have been neglected by government.”

We called on all levels of government to commit to the protection of low and affordable housing, raising the assistance rates to realistic levels, continuation of the 4 Pillars comprehensive approach, protecting and enhancing public services, leading in environmental sustainablility andreinvesting in public transit.

In order to monitor the impacts of Project Civil City and its failure to address serious social issues in our City, we are holding this forum on May22, to listen and learn from community leaders and residents who have concerns about the Mayor’s program.

Community leaders will talk about what they know about the situation of citizens targeted in the implementation of Project Civil City and what its possible implications will be in the future. There will also be an open mike for those attending to share their stories.

Community Leaders invited to speak are:

David Eby, Pivot legal Society;

Cynthia Low, Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre;

Micheal Bond, Policy Director of the BC Civil Liberties Society;

Andy Yan from the Carnegie Action Project;

Sara Kendal, Youth Worker;

Please join us Tuesday, May 22, at 7 pm, for this important forum.

If you have any questions about this forum please get in touch with Ellen Woodsworth at 604 328-8230.
