3000 Dead Soldiers • Peace Action Alert

December 24, 2006

BPF Logo - SmallMaia has written to remind us that, in addition to [hundreds of] thousands of dead Iraqis, with more than 2950 U.S. military fatalities confirmed to date by the DoD, that number will reach 3000 soon – a time for action. And Congress is going along with the plan to send more troops. Maia suggests three responses:

1) Hold a vigil in your community

Our colleagues at the American Friends Service Committee are leading this campaign, with the message: Not One More Death, Not One More Dollar. Visit their website to find out how you can organize a vigil and list it on the AFSC online directory. See: http://www.afsc.org/3000/

2) Call or email the office of Senator Harry Reid

Tell him you expect the Democrats to follow the clear wishes of the electorate and bring the troops home from Iraq. Call Reid at 202-224-2158 or 202-224-7003 or email his chief of staff: Susan_McCue [at] reid [dot] senate [dot] gov
[There also is a (maybe not so effective) email form here: http://reid.senate.gov/contact/email_form.cfm ]

3) Join the Buddhist Peace Delegation Jan 26-29 in Washington, DC

Join our contingent of peacemakers, inspired by the way of peace taught by Thich Nhat Hanh, Joanna Macy, H.H. the Dalai Lama, and many other teachers. We are organizing a Friday evening meditation and teach-in, we’ll walk mindfully together on Saturday with thousands of others during a Peace March organized by United for Peace and Justice, and we will lobby our Representatives on Monday. Our intention is to contribute a collective voice for peace and to offer a spiritual refuge for those attending the weekend.

One Response to “3000 Dead Soldiers • Peace Action Alert”

  1. Dharmavidya Says:

It is imporant to protest but it is also important to build an alternative approach. The war machine that is at work in the world at the moment is gaining momentum and becoming more integrated into every aspect of society. Will 2007 see the use of nuclear weapons – it is not impossible. Will the middle east war envelop yet more countries – it is highly likely. Will the world as we know it come to an end – probably more quickly than we imagine. We should be prepared for dark times ahead and the transmission of the Dharma is most precious when the times are most dark.
